DIY Holiday Hat for Your Dog or Cat: Add Festive Pom Poms to Your PupLid

Looking for an easy and festive DIY dog holiday accessory? This simple PupLid pom pom DIY is a fun way to dress up your dog’s hat for the holidays. It’s beginner-friendly, removable, and works with any PupLid style.

For supplies, I went to a local craft store and grabbed jumbo-sized pom poms for under $3. I originally picked up some tinsel-decorated ones but quickly realized the tinsel was shedding everywhere, and I didn’t want my dog to ingest it. That said, Lou was still very interested in the pom poms, so keep that in mind while you’re DIYing. Just be sure to keep an eye on your pet as you’re crafting!

Step 1 – Supplies

I ended up buying two pom pom sizes to try, one smaller and one larger. I decorated a small-size hat and ultimately went with the larger pom pom because it felt more balanced and festive, and also a little ridiculous haha. In hindsight, I should have brought the hat with me to the craft store to help decide which size worked best, so I definitely recommend doing that. I also purchased extra thread in white to match the pom poms. If you don’t already have a needle, you’ll need one as well.

Step 2 – Prepare your needle & thread

This may take a few tries, depending on how skilled you are. Not shown in the DIY video is me struggling to thread the needle. I ended up using a double thread to make sure everything stayed secure.

Step 3 – Let’s thread!

Pick where you’d like the pom poms to sit on the hat. I threaded through the hat first and then into the pom pom, looping it back through the pom pom so I could easily tie it off inside the hat. To keep the thread from slipping, I knotted the first pass a few times to lock it in place. This also helped when tightening the other end to tie off.

Once it was tight against the hat, I knotted off the other end and tied both ends together. Listen, I’m a novice sewer. I can patch the occasional hole in my clothes, but is it professional and pretty? No. Is it visible to anyone else? Also no. For this DIY, it doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be secure enough so it’s not slipping when your pup is wearing it. Once one side is secured, repeat on the other side.

Step 4 – Photoshoot

Now this is arguably the most important and necessary step. If there are no photos, did it really happen? Be sure to share with us if you try this DIY. You can email us photos or tag us on socials @puplid or #DIYpuplid.
