Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Health Benefits of PupLid Hats?
We know that bright sunlight can cause discomfort for our eyes, so most of us wear sunglasses or a hat on sunny days to avoid squinting and eye damage. The same is true for dogs; light sensitivity is especially common in dogs with blue and light-colored eyes and a little shade can go a long way to make them more comfortable outdoors.
There are also many eye conditions where sun protection is important including pannus (chronic superficial keratitis), cataracts, iris atrophy, uveitis and sun-induced cancers of the eyes, eyelids and pigment around the eyes. For dogs with shorter noses that are shaded by the bill, the puplid can also protect the nose from sunburn and help reduce the risk for sun induced skin cancers on the nose.
How do I train my dog to wear a PupLid hat?
Use treats and fun rewards to help your dog get used to their PupLid. Let your dog sniff their PupLid until they accept it. Gently place the hat on your dog’s head, pull the ears through and fasten the chinstrap. Keep the first few sessions short to help your dog get used to wearing it. When hat-wearing is paired with a favorite walk or trip to the park, many dogs start getting excited to see their hat because they know they are about to go on an adventure!
We've partnered with the amazing celebrity trainer Nicole Ellis to create this step-by-step video:
How do I put a PupLid on my dog?
Step 1 | Step 2 | Step 3 | Step 4 |
Open the velcro chinstrap and place the PupLid on your dog's head. Gently pull their ears through the elastic loop on each side. | Fasten the chinstrap under your dog's chin making sure to leave about two fingers of space between the chinstrap and your dog's neck - secure but not tight. To remove the hat, unfasten the chinstrap and gently lift the hat off your dog's head. | Adjust the position of the PupLid by sliding the chinstrap forward or back along the elastic loops. The hat brim should sit over the eyes to provide the desired shade, so pull the hat forward and adjust the chinstrap accordingly. |
Once the right position is found, slide the side toggles down to lock the chinstrap position in place. For Dogs with longer heads, bigger ears or thicker necks, removing the side toggles often helps - see below. |
How well do puplids stay on?
In a word, great! Check out the video on our home page which shows our dog, Buddy, playing ball and running full-speed with his hat on.
Overall there are 5 points of contact around the hat, two located on each side and one under the chin. All these contact points mean the hat stays on without needing to make it too tight. The hook and loop fastens under the chin with room and allows for adjustment. The slider loops can be moved up and down the elastic bands for more subtle adjustment. See the custom fit features here as well as video of how to put a PupLid on your pup.
Please do not place the puplid too tightly around your dog’s neck or ears for obvious safety and comfort reasons. If it’s too small, return the puplid for a full refund.
What is the Furfect Fit® System?
Strong Elastic Loop | Soft Velcro Chinstrap | Locking Slider |
Elastic loop is anchored to the four corners of the hat to provide superior stability during activity. | Velcro chinstrap provides extra length adjustability while sliding back and forth along the elastic cord to fit each dog's unique neck and head. | Once the chinstrap is properly positioned under the chin, the slider locks it in place. This slider can also be removed for dogs with larger necks and heads to improve the fit. |
How to get the Furfect Fit® for larger dogs?
Unsnap Chinstrap | Remove Side Toggle | Snap on Chinstrap |
Remove the chinstrap from the elastic loops by unsnapping the buttons. | Slide off the side toggles from the elastic loops on both sides of the puplid. | Snap the chinstrap back onto the elastic loops. Result is a larger ear opening for more freedom of ear movement. |

Will it fit my dog?
Go to our Gallery Page to see all sizes and types of dogs wearing puplids.
If your dog has bigger ears or a thicker neck, the side toggles can be removing by unsnapping the chinstraps, as show in the diagram below. This opens up the elastic straps to allow more flexibility in fitting the puplid to your dog.
What are puplids made from?
Puplids are made of the same material as standard human hats. The crown consists of polyester mesh and a foam backed front panel. The adjustment system consists of polyester and cotton side slider loops and chin strap tabs. The chin strap is backed with hook and loop fasteners, and the main strap consists of elastic cord for flexibility.
